Taking training to the jungle
From Yurimaguas, you can take a 12-14 hour "speed boat" ride along the Huallaga and Pastazo rivers to Ullpayacu (uzh pa ya ku). Almost all of the jungle pastors save money and take the slow boat (Lancha) which carries goods through the river system. This ride is 30+ hours on top of days of travel from their home villages. It can literally take a week to get to the "city."
For this reason, our team is working with Pastor Rodrigo to expand his church, which will include a dormitory and kitchen, and make a training center. This will give us a more central location to host orality training and Bible School classes. Pastor Jerry Moore led a team of 6 men from Carmel Assembly to help pour the concrete floor for the new training center. Many men and women from the church pitched in and helped. It was a big task, but we "got-er done!"
Having these training centers is a critical part of raising up future church leaders. Without them, pastors are burdened by the length and expense of travel. Additionally, local pastors are encouraging members of their congregations to forego the conveniences of city life and move out to these remote communities to live and disciple!
